In response to calls from across Scottish society to fast track a new income supplement to help tackle child poverty, yesterday the Scottish Government announced the new ‘Scottish Child Payment’.
This extra £10 a week for eligible children will help unlock thousands from poverty.
Ewan Aitken, Chief Executive Officer of Cyrenians, said:
“We’re glad that Parliament has heard the call from those who experience poverty, and those who support them. By loosening the grip of poverty on children and families, the Scottish Child Payment will drastically improve tens of thousands of peoples’ lives, leading to greater opportunities to flourish and to lead a fulfilling life.
Beyond showing an example to the rest of the world of what care and compassion looks like, today’s announcement means that as a country we’ll be lifting more and more children out of poverty, and giving hope to families across Scotland. The action taken shows what we can do together to tackle the injustices of today in view of a brighter future.”
