Mike and Sarah found out about Cyrenians Homelessness Prevention Service when they found a leaflet at the Council’s Housing office. They were in a lot of financial trouble as their mortgage arrears had built up into significant debt. They were facing repossession.
Mike had lost his job three months previously and was now receiving Job Seeker’s Allowance after being in employment all his working life. Their main source of income was from Sarah’s job as a carer. This was not enough to cover their outgoings. They had fallen behind with their mortgage payments and other debts, including a trust deed and secured loan. They initially believed there was nothing that could be done to keep their home.
They organised a meeting with a Homeless Options Team worker to prepare for losing their home and the impact of this on them and their sons.
Their personal advisor was able to help them to open up communication with their lenders and creditors, explained the circumstances and that they were taking action on dealing with their debts. Mike and Sarah were introduced by their Cyrenians advisor to a local financial advisor who offered to help them at no charge. The financial advisor helped them to find a solution that allowed them to remain in their home. This involved their son taking over the mortgage and while Mike and Sarah became tenants in their home.
We didn’t end our journey with Mike and Sarah here. Our Enterprise to Employment service gave him weekly support to seek employment opportunities. Within a few weeks Mike was offered a new full time job.
