Opportunities for Active Lives (OPAL)

OPAL is a preventative, community-based service supporting people aged 60+ across West Lothian to maintain independence, improve wellbeing and strengthen social connections. Delivered by trained volunteers and supported through partnerships with West Lothian Council, West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership and NHS Lothian, the service helps older adults remain active and engaged within their local communities.

The service offers two core strands of support. Community groups provide regular opportunities for social interaction, physical activity and community participation through a wide range of local groups and activities. These groups are designed to reduce isolation, foster meaningful connections and support positive mental and physical wellbeing.

OPAL's one-to-one service provides time-limited, goal-focused support, typically over 6 to 9 months. Individuals are matched with trained volunteers and receive personalised support to build confidence, access community resources, improve wellbeing and achieve specific outcomes. Referrals can be made by professionals, and self-referrals are also accepted.

Additional support includes digital inclusion services, helping older adults develop confidence using digital devices and online services.

OPAL is particularly suitable for older people experiencing social isolation, reduced confidence, limited community engagement or barriers to maintaining independence. For referrals or further information, contact 01506 815 815 or opal@cyrenians.scot.
