Lothian and Edinburgh Abstinence Programme (LEAP)

LEAP (Lothian and Edinburgh Abstinence Programme) provides specialist recovery support for individuals working towards long-term abstinence from alcohol and drug use. Delivered in partnership with NHS services, the programme combines clinical treatment with person-centred psychosocial support to help individuals build sustainable recovery and improve overall wellbeing.

As part of the programme, Cyrenians provides out-of-hours support for participants involved in LEAP, complementing the clinical care delivered through NHS services. Working alongside healthcare professionals and peer support workers, the service promotes a therapeutic community approach, recognising the importance of relationships, mutual support and active participation in recovery.

Participants are supported to engage in structured wellbeing activities, develop coping strategies and build the confidence and resilience needed to maintain recovery beyond treatment. The programme includes both group-based and one-to-one support, encouraging individuals to take an active role in shaping their recovery journey and identifying goals that are meaningful to them.

LEAP is particularly suited to individuals who are committed to an abstinence-based recovery pathway and would benefit from a holistic model that addresses emotional wellbeing, social connection and long-term lifestyle change alongside clinical treatment.

The service supports continuity between treatment and community-based recovery, helping participants establish stronger support networks, maintain engagement with services and reduce the risk of relapse. Professionals working in addiction, health, housing, mental health and community support services may wish to consider LEAP as part of a wider recovery and support plan.
