Elsie* is an older lady who has lived alone since her husband died last year. She told us that when her husband died she could not afford the funeral – she used all the savings she had and got a grant but this meant she was left with no money to buy herself food.
Elsie’s support worker asked her if she needed food but she said she was too embarrassed to tell her the truth, so instead she went without food for a few days. Following this, Elsie fell ill for a period of time, and even although she is now well she has got out of the habit of cooking and says she just doesn’t know what to buy.
Elsie found out about Cyrenians Community Cook Clubs from one of our posters in her local area and she came along one day on her own. The Cook Clubs offer both a free nutritious meal and the company of others – “something to eat, someone to eat with” – both things that were missing for Elsie.
The Cook Clubs have given Elsie her social life back and she is really enjoying the home cooked meals. We’ve also been giving Elsie some menu planning tips and she’s now starting to get back into a routine and getting back into the swing of cooking.
