Cyrenians signs IRES Employability Pledge

Director of Services, Michelle Lloyd writes on how the IRES approach recognises that a connected, regional skills system delivers better outcomes for individuals, employers and local communities. 

Cyrenians is proud to have signed the IRES 2027+ Employability Pledge, joining employers, partners and organisations across Edinburgh and Southeast Scotland in supporting a coordinated approach to employability, skills and workforce development. The pledge highlights the importance of continuing the Integrated Regional Employability and Skills (IRES) programme beyond 2027 and recognises the value of regional collaboration in creating opportunities for people and businesses alike. 

At its heart, this pledge reflects something we see every day through our work: when organisations come together, the impact is far greater than any one organisation can achieve alone. Strong partnerships between employers, training providers, education institutions and community organisations help create clearer pathways into meaningful employment and ensure people are not left behind. The IRES approach recognises that a connected, regional skills system delivers better outcomes for individuals, employers and local communities. 

This commitment closely aligns with our own values and ambitions at Cyrenians. Across our services, we support people who have often faced barriers to traditional employability routes. This includes individuals who have left education early, people with experience of the justice system, veterans, and those managing mental health challenges. Too often, talented individuals are excluded because they do not fit the conventional mould or have not had access to the qualifications and opportunities that others may take for granted. 

The pledge's focus on inclusive growth, partnership working and creating pathways into employment also complements our wider work around Green Social Care and the transition to Net Zero.

Developing future skills, supporting sustainable careers and providing wraparound, whole-person support are all essential if we are to build resilient communities and a workforce that is ready for the future. 

We also recognise the importance of the strong relationships we have built with employers and partners across the region, including organisations such as the Robertson Group, Capital City Partnership, Balfour Beatty and the University of Edinburgh. These partnerships help create real opportunities for the people we support and demonstrate the value of working alongside each other. 

By signing the IRES Employability Pledge, we are reaffirming our commitment to inclusion, opportunity and collaboration. Together, we can create a future where everyone has the chance to develop their skills, fulfil their potential and access meaningful employment. The whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
