Cyrenians announces planned CEO transition
Cyrenians has today announced that Ewan Aitken, Chief Executive, will step down from his role at the end of June 2026, following nearly 12 years leading the organisation.
Ewan has made a personal decision to step back after more than 30 years in leadership roles, allowing time for reflection and a slower pace in the next chapter of his life. This is a planned transition, agreed with Cyrenians’ Board of Trustees, and Ewan will remain fully in post until June to ensure continuity and a smooth handover to his successor.
During his time as Chief Executive, Ewan has overseen a period of significant development for Cyrenians, helping to shape a strong organisational culture rooted in its values and guiding the charity’s public-health approach to homelessness prevention. Under his leadership, Cyrenians has continued to grow and evolve, strengthening its services and partnerships while remaining focused on preventing homelessness and supporting people to build stable futures.
The Board of Trustees will now lead a robust recruitment process to appoint Cyrenians’ next Chief Executive. Further details, including timelines and opportunities for staff involvement, will be shared in due course.
Commenting on the announcement, Ewan said:
“This has been the best job I have ever had. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and of the culture, values and sense of purpose that run through Cyrenians. While this decision has not been an easy one, it feels like the right time for me personally, and I am confident the organisation is well placed for the future.”
Cyrenians Chair of the Board, John Lawrie, added:
“It has been a privilege for me to work with Ewan Aitken throughout his twelve years as Chief Executive. For Cyrenians it has been a time of growth – in size, in influence and in scale of achievement, for all of which he deserves credit. The Board regrets his decision to stand down, while fully understanding the reasons. We wish him well and will ensure that Cyrenians can build on his legacy.”
Cyrenians’ services, partnerships and strategic priorities remain unchanged, and the organisation continues its vital work across prevention, early intervention and support into a home.
