Elementary Food Hygiene and Elementary Cooking Skills courses

  • Elementary Food Hygiene provides the basic knowledge and understanding of food hygiene, the effects of poor standards and prevention measures, and the legal aspects in Scotland (£65 per person).
  • Elementary Cooking Skills provides participants with the basic cooking skills to increase confidence and knowledge in food cooking, preparation and presentation. This also includes aspects of food safety and hygiene (£200 per person, this is based on if there's at least 4 participants).

Both these courses are in-person with the option to do the Elementary Food Hygiene course online. The Food Hygiene course can only be booked in-person, if you do a group booking. Please get in touch with us through email or phone 0131 554 3900.

Elementary Food Hygiene (online)

6 hours of self-directed learning online with telephone, email and/or Zoom support available as needed from our REHIS accredited trainer. This is followed by a short multiple-choice exam conducted either in person or remotely via Zoom.

This course is available throughout the year at a date and time suitable to you.

Good Food Good Health

Our comprehensive Good Food Good Health course is a unique training programme exclusive to Cyrenians, empowering individuals and organisations to implement and sustain their own cooking class programmes, supporting their clients to learn valuable independent living skills.

This Joint Award by REHIS and Cyrenians, brings together a wealth of experience and expertise focused on food and health. This course trains the trainers in the theory and practice, whilst delivering a full programme of cooking classes to clients from the participant's organisation.

A pre-requisite of the course is that participants hold a REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene certificate.

This is a blended learning course with 4 online modules of self-directed learning supported with printed resources and activity sheets followed by 6 weeks’ of practical in-person cooking classes to develop confidence and hands-on experience.

Over the six weeks we support you every step of the way, provide all the ingredients required and work with you to consider how best to deliver sessions around your clients’ needs, whilst also gaining the practical experience and confidence to lead classes in the future.

What an enlightening course. As a parent I learned things perhaps I should have known, such as salt and sugar consumption. The weekly meal planner was an eye opener, the training brought it to life and made it relevant. I honestly think all parents/professionals should be given the opportunity to attend this training.

We strongly recommend 2 members of staff or volunteers enrol on the course at the same time to ensure a successful and sustainable delivery in the future. Prices start from £500 per person with reduced rates for group bookings (ideally 4 or 8 people).

To arrange training, or find out more about our courses and group bookings please get in touch with us through email or phone 0131 554 3900.
