The Power of Residential Volunteering

Nicole LeBlond, Communities Service Manager, writes about the positive impact of volunteers in our residential communities. Cyrenians have 5 residential communities for people aged 16+, housing homeless young people, unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors, and those managing trauma and poor mental health. Our community members join us as a step towards independent living and are supported by our staff team and brilliant volunteers.

At Cyrenians' Edinburgh Communities, something truly special happens every day—and much of it is thanks to the incredible commitment of our residential volunteers.

As a staff member, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside dozens of volunteers who choose to live at one of our communities and immerse themselves in a supportive environment that helps people move on from homelessness. It’s not just life-changing for our residents—it’s often just as transformative for the volunteers themselves.

A Unique Volunteering Opportunity in Edinburgh

This is no ordinary role. Our residential volunteer programme offers free accommodation and in often includes meals and a weekly allowance. It is a 6-month immersive experience that gives volunteers the chance to truly connect with people and contribute to something meaningful. For many—especially students or young people exploring career paths in social care—this opportunity provides not only a place to live in Edinburgh but also a place to grow, learn, and make a real difference.

Supporting Community Members on Their Journey

Our community members have all faced the challenges of homelessness. They are rebuilding their lives with courage and determination, and volunteers play a vital role in that journey. Whether it's helping cook a shared meal, taking a group to the climbing wall, supporting someone with new commitments like training or volunteering, or simply being there for a conversation after a tough day, the input and presence of volunteers enriches everyday life here.

Volunteers help create a warm, respectful, and nurturing environment where people feel safe enough to trust again. That trust is the foundation for growth—and I’ve seen how the smallest acts of encouragement can lead to powerful moments of change.

"Volunteering at the communities is one the best things I’ve ever done. It has changed so much for me and allowed me to explore new avenues. I loved my placement so much, I applied for one of the posts and I am now part of the staff team – life changing!” - Former Residential volunteer

A Stepping Stone for Volunteers, Too

What’s equally inspiring is how much our volunteers gain from the experience. Many arrive looking to give something back—but leave with newfound confidence, career-ready skills, and friendships that last long after their placement ends.

This opportunity offers practical experience that’s directly relevant for careers in social care, psychology, housing, mental health, and community work. Volunteers build skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, emotional resilience, and safeguarding—key qualities that employers increasingly look for. For those who are job hunting, or preparing for a future in support work, this experience stands out on a CV and shows a genuine commitment to people and purpose.

We've had many volunteers join us while attending university or college in Edinburgh, with many even asking to extend their volunteer role at the end of the 6 months. Several have gone on to pursue successful careers in frontline roles, citing their time with us as a turning point.

“I love the fact you are here because you want to be. My volunteer buddy has taught me so much” - Community resident

Community, Connection, and Compassion

What makes this volunteering opportunity truly unique is the community spirit it fosters. Volunteers, residents, and staff form strong bonds, and together we create a space where dignity, empathy, and mutual support are at the heart of everything.

This model of peer support and shared living is powerful. It brings stability, structure, and joy to our residents—and it brings purpose, insight, and growth to our volunteers.

If you or someone you know is looking for a volunteering role in Edinburgh that offers more than just hours on a rota—one that offers real life experience, the chance to live in community, and make a genuine difference—this is it.
