Overview

At the Cyrenians’ Royal Edinburgh Hospital Community Gardens, we endeavour to provide an inclusive, beautiful, interesting and relaxing space for communities to grow together.  The Community Gardens welcome hospital patients, staff and visitors, as well as individuals and groups from the local community.  The gardens have a particular focus on welcoming people who are experiencing mental / physical poor health, disadvantage, isolation or poverty.

Cyrenians run Green Activity Sessions in the gardens, orchard, woodlands and hospital grounds.  These sessions allow individuals and groups to benefit from the therapeutic aspects of gardening, wildlife and the outdoors.  Participants on the Green Activity Sessions are referred through a third party e.g GP, link worker, community mental health team, support worker, or can self-refer.  This is part of Cyrenians green social prescribing activities for adults.

Currently, Cyrenians are working in partnership with Thrive Edinburgh. The Thrive Physical Activity and Greenspaces Collective partners (ELGT, Edinburgh Leisure, SAMH and Cyrenians), are together supporting people experiencing poor mental health.  The aim is to prevent or delay the need for more intensive support by enabling people to develop their own meaningful activities using ‘greenspaces’.  Through referrals, participants can join the Cyrenians Green Activity Sessions.

What are the aims and expectations of the role?

Cyrenians need volunteers to work alongside and support participants in a variety of green activities.  The sessions will be guided by the Green Activity Coordinator.

Your support and encouragement could help participants to:

  • Engage with green activities to benefit their physical / mental health.
  • Relax and de-stress by spending some time in a ‘greenspace’.
  • Reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Learn and share skills and knowledge.
  • Increase self-confidence.
