Operating from our Fareshare UK Depot in Leith, our access to free period products provided over 22,000 individuals dignified access to sanitary towels, tampons, reusable pads and menstrual cups last year.
Through Scottish Government Funding we’ve been able to provide sanitary products free of charge to areas most likely to serve those experiencing period poverty.
Period products are a necessity, but they are expensive. With 14 million people* in the UK experiencing poverty, tight budgets can leave people forced to prioritise other purchases. As a result many will miss out on school or work, or struggle to concentrate fully.
In 2018, Plan International UK research found that period poverty affects 1 in 10 schoolgirls across the UK. In Scotland, the number is thought to be closer to 1 in 4.
Through our Access to Free Period Products project we’re determined to ensure those who have periods are able to take part in their community without the worry of not having the right products.
As part of our commitment to finding sustainable, environmentally sound solutions we also offer workshops to help breakdown the mystery around reusable products such as the menstrual cup.
