Cyrenians understand that sometimes when individuals are faced with a tough reality, other problems can arise. Because of our understanding, we are always mindful of supporting our clients with a holistic approach. Here’s Jane’s* story.
*Names have been changed to preserve anonymity.
Jane was initially referred to Cyrenians Homeless Prevention Service. Jane was facing a housing and emotional crisis. She was not managing her money effectively, her home was falling into disrepair and her son had recently moved out. As a result, Jane was feeling more and more isolated and her health was starting to suffer.
Jane’s HPS advisor identified and supported her to apply for the benefits and other dispensation she was entitled to. Her advisor also applied for various grants and Jane was able to have her flat decorated and other building problems resolved.
After this, Jane was then referred to Golden Years as she was still feeling isolated and anxious about leaving her house. Jane was matched to a volunteer, Sammy*. Sammy spent the first weeks building a trusted relationship with Jane, finding out what types of activities she used to enjoy and find out what activities she would like to revisit or explore. Jane spoke of wanting to get healthier and her GP had advised she should join a gym, however she was anxious to do this and felt she could not afford the fees. However, with support from Sammy, she was able to register for a gym card and together they have been attending fitness classes.
In August, Golden Years held a lunch and social event at Cyrenians Good Food Depot in which Jane and Sammy attended. Jane thoroughly enjoyed it and was introduced to the Cyrenians staff and volunteers who run the Cooking Skills course; a course which supports people to learn about healthy cooking on a budget. As Jane had expressed to Sammy that she wanted to meet new people and socialise, Golden Years were able to refer Jane to the course; as Jane has struggled with finances in the past, the Cooking Skills course appealed to her as it will support her to learn how to make healthy meals on a budget whilst meeting new people.
This is a true example of the benefits of joined up working within Cyrenians. HPS have been able to change the direction Jane’s life was spiraling in, Golden Years have improved Jane’s sense of well-being and value, supporting her reconnect to her community and now Good Food are providing Jane with healthy cooking and budget skills, as well as companionship in a social kitchen.
